When we sit down for reciting the Quran, the sincerity of intention is the most important. We constantly have to remind ourselves that actions are judged by intention.
Allah’s Messenger (sa) said: “The reward of deeds depends upon the intention, and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended.” (Bukhari)
Most people recite the Quran with the intention of reward and blessing only. There are intentions that can benefit the reciter in more than one way and take our effort to a whole new level.
Here are some intentions we can make before reciting the Quran to increase the rewards and benefits Insha’Allah.
- To gain knowledge and act upon it.
- To be guided by Allah (swt).
- To remember Allah (swt).
- To cure illnesses of my body and soul.
- So that Allah (swt) brings me out of darkness into the light and increases the Nur of my heart.
- To soften my heart and not make me among the hard-hearted people.
- To clear the doubts in my heart and make my Iman strong.
- So that I am not among the ignorant (Ghafil) but instead am written among those who remember Allah (swt).
- To increase my faith and understanding of names and attributes of Allah (swt).
- To be among the obedient servants of Allah (swt).
- For receiving rewards: 10 rewards promised for every letter by the bounty of Allah (swt).
- To be eligible for Quran’s intercession on the Day of Judgement.
- To follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (sa).
- To be among those who attain the highest ranks in Jannah.
- So that my parents may wear the crown of light more radiant than the sun and the gown of honour in Jannah.
- To be close to Allah (swt) and be among the special people of Allah (swt) mentioned in this Hadeeth: Anas ibn Malik reported that the Messenger of Allah (sa) said: “Verily, Allah (swt) has His own people among humanity.” They said: “O, Messenger of Allah, who are they?” The Prophet (sa) said: “They are the people of the Quran, the people of Allah (swt) and His chosen ones.” (Ibn Majah)
- To be with the honourable and obedient scribes (angels) and be among those who are proficient in its recitation.
- To save myself from the hellfire and Allah’s (swt) torment in this Duniya and in Akhirah.
- To attain steadfastness in my Deen.
- To attain Sakinah (peace of mind and soul).
- So that Allah (swt) mentions my name in the company of angels.
- To receive the pure air carrying the smell of Jannah.
- To attain goodness and bounties of Allah (swt).
- So that I am not misguided by the distractions around me.
- To remove all my sad and depressing thoughts.
- To make it my friend, when it comes to intercede in my grave.
- To attain empathy and build my character by following the prophets.
- To be able to differentiate between truth and falsehood and be steadfast on the truth.
- To be able to fight the battle of egos, struggle against self, and not let the whispers of Shaitan misguide me.
O Allah (swt), You are the One Who guides. Guide us to be among the people of the Quran and gain all these benefits.
“Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties [in exchange] for that they will have Paradise. They fight in the cause of Allah, so they kill and are killed. [It is] a true promise [binding] upon Him in the Torah and the Gospel and the Qur’an. And who is truer to his covenant than Allah? So rejoice in your transaction which you have contracted. And it is that which is the great attainment.” (At-Tawbah 9:111)
