Kulsoom Abdullah, a Pakistani champion weight lifter, took up lifting to get strong. Later, when she decided to compete, the U.S. weightlifting organization would not accept the long-sleeve shirts, pants and Hijab she wore. When she protested in the press, the weightlifting federation allowed her to represent Pakistan in an international competition in Hijab.
Kulsoom Abdullah is Crossfit Level I certified. She attended the University of Central Florida, where she received her Bachelor’s degree in computer engineering. She also completed her doctorate in electrical/computer engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Her website LiftingCovered.com and Facebook page talks about her experiences at U.S. national competitions. She opened the doors for women from cultures around the world to compete. She attended her first U.S. national competition in Iowa in July, 2011.
