وَأُخْرَىٰ تُحِبُّونَهَا ۖ نَصْرٌ مِّنَ اللَّهِ وَفَتْحٌ قَرِيبٌ ۗ وَبَشِّرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ
“And also (He will give you) another (blessing) which you love – help from Allah (against your enemies) and a near victory. And give glad tidings (O Muhammad sa) to the believers.” (As-Saff 61:13)
In contemporary times, when justice seems like a mirage and falsehood reigns supreme in the world, it is easy to get sucked into despondency. But the above verse from the glorious Quran brightens a believer’s horizon. It grants solace to the heart, kindles optimism, and increases our faith in Allah (swt).
In reality, Allah’s (swt) help is always present. Otherwise nothing could happen and no achievement could have been possible.
For Muslims, the ultimate success is in the Hereafter, but Allah (swt) gives us glad tidings about the Duniya too. It is human nature to want to see some fruit of our labour. This motivates us to act further. With the tide of Kufr ruling the roost, a believer wants to witness Islam rising with its glory and justice.
Our Creator neither negates this wish of ours nor neglects it. Allah (swt) acknowledges and appreciates man’s love to attain victory in the affairs of the world to establish a merciful and just system.
What does ‘victory’ mean in Islam?
Nasr
The first keyword in the above quoted Ayah is ‘Nasr’. Nasr comes from the root word ‘Nasara’. This means to aid or help. It also means to aid in repelling an offense or attack. It means to triumph.
From this root comes ‘Naasir’ meaning helper. One of the attributive names of Allah (swt) is An-Naasir, which means ‘The Helper’.
Another attributive name that comes from the same root is ‘An-Naseer’ meaning ‘The Supporter’.
Allah (swt) is indeed the best Helper and the best Supporter.
When the emigrants of Makkah landed in Madinah, they were welcomed with unparalleled love, kindness and hospitality by the inhabitants of Madinah who were granted the distinguished title of ‘Al-Ansaar’, the helpers.
Similarly, the true disciples of Isa (as) were called the Hawariyyoon also falling into the category of ‘Al-Ansaar’.
Fath
The second key word used in the above Ayah is ‘Fath’. ‘Fath’ comes from the root ‘Fataha’ which means to open, to find a way, key, to conquer, victory to adjudicate, to conquest.
The attributive name of Allah (swt) that comes from this root is Al-Fattah, the best judge, the best arbitrator, the opener, the giver of victory.
Allah’s (swt) help is always there
- The above verse and many others in the Quran promise the believers victory. Military victory! We have Surah Nasr, Surah Rum, Surah Al Imran and Surah Taubah with similar Ayahs.
- It must be understood that Allah (swt) not only helps but all help comes only from Allah (swt). It may be in the form of an idea, a resource, a person, change of events, and so on.
- Allah (swt) asserts emphatically that it is the right of Allah (swt) to support and aid His true Momineen.
- As Momineen, we need to believe that victory is not far. It is imminent.
- Allah’s (swt) help is not just restricted to the material world. He will also help His believing slaves in the Hereafter with His grace and mercy.
Are you an Ansaar of Allah (swt)?
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِن تَنصُرُوا اللَّهَ يَنصُرْكُمْ وَيُثَبِّتْ أَقْدَامَكُمْ
“O you who have believed, if you support Allah, He will support you and plant firmly your feet.” (Muhammad 47:7)
What does it mean to become a supporter of Allah (swt)? It means to support His cause and aid His Messenger (sa). It means following His guidance, facilitating the spread of His message far and wide, and bringing peace to this world, mercy to Allah’s (swt) suffering creation, and justice to dispel the darkness of evil.
And for that, all you need to do is follow the Quran and the Messenger (sa) and you will become the best version of yourself, In sha Allah. And Allah’s (swt) help will surely come.
