“He got the latest model of the car, I can only dream of driving!”
“Wow.. are you expecting.. again?”
“Your hair are so lustrous and long..”
“That’s a big house you live in man!”
Have you ever felt jealous? Ever felt someone has something better than you? Is someone leading a better life than you? Or perhaps, someone better looking than you? It happens right. For some of us, the thought comes on for second, and it’s gone the next. But for some of us, it’s all we think of. Might be just a flame of fire that Shaytan ignites- but that ends up into a hot, blazing and roaring fire.
Jealousy is nothing, but destruction- self-destruction! When a person is jealous of someone, he/she is only tormenting themselves, burning in a fire, unable to see someone happy. It’s mentally exhausting and psychologically painful.
It is narrated by Abu Hurairah (rta) that the Prophet (sa) said: “Beware of envy because envy consumes (destroys) the virtues just as the fire consumes the firewood,” or he said “grass.”
(Abu Dawud)
We are all blessed in different ways; we all also have different problems. Envying someone is basically being unhappy with what Allah (swt) has given us. When we get jealous, we are actually questioning Allah’s (swt) Wisdom. Here Tawakkal comes in role; we are supposed to trust Allah (swt) – trust Him with what He has chosen to give us, and what He has chosen not to give us. He knows what is best for us, and what is best for each and every being He has created.
The fire of jealousy can be extinguished by:
- The power of will and trust in Allah (swt)
All we need is a bit of will power, and a whole lot of Tawakkal. We need to know in our heart that what we have been bestowed with, and what is written in our Qadr is the absolute best. With this faith, and only with this faith can we convert the blazing fire in our hearts into coolness and contentment.
- Making Dua
Making Dua for the person we are jealous of, and for ourselves is also a way to get rid of this feeling, which also brings Allah’s (swt) blessing for both along with the peace of heart

It is reported by ‘Abdullah b. Mas’ud that Allah’s Messenger (sa) said:
There should be no envy- but only in case of two persons: one having been endowed with wealth and power to spend it in the cause of Truth, and (the other) who has been endowed with wisdom and he decides cases with the help of it and teaches it (to others). (Muslim)
Let’s learn to be people with bigger and warmer hearts; let’s learn to be happy with the happiness of others; and let’s learn to thank Allah (swt). Because, Allah (swt) has promised us that if we thank Him, He will give us so much more. Let’s only be jealous of the people who- spend their wealth in the way of Allah (swt), and those who learn Islam and teach it to others- and make this world a better place. Insha’Allah!.
