Editorial: Social Media Addiction

November 19, 2024 /Posted byRana Rais Khan / 230

Allah (swt) has granted a remarkable gift to humans – the ability to decide for themselves. They can remember the past, contemplate the present, or forecast the future, and eventually make the best decision. Animals cannot do this.

Also, people can break free from mind control. It is absolutely in Allah’s (swt) power to seize all freedom and make everyone believe and surrender. Yet, He offers a choice to all to select their own paths and provides facilitation through His signs scattered throughout the universe, divine scriptures, chain of prophets, and an active soul to recognize the truth, when presented.

On the contrary, the New World Order wants to take away the freedom of people to decide for themselves. Naturally, before Dajjal (the greatest liar) arrives to claim his place as the lord of the world, his subjects are setting a stage by turning people into a flock of dumb sheep. This has been done via many tools. Social media takes the cake.

Do you buy or not buy based on your notifications? Do you keep checking your status every now and then, even if there is no need? The smartphone, which was originally meant for communication, has become our master. The greatest game of mind control has been unleashed into our lives via influencers.

An influencer is a person who inspires or guides the actions of others, generates interest in consumer products by posting about it on social media, and affects the purchasing decisions of others because of his or her authority, knowledge, position, or relationship with the audience. In return, the influencer constantly produces content for pleasing the viewers and catering to their likes, allowing others to watch his or her every move. He or she is promised money, fame, and admiration from fans.

What about the followers? The follower is a person who supports and admires a particular person and gives full loyalty to him or her. Such an individual forms attachment either to the person or to the beliefs of another by imitating their values, morals, and behaviours. He or she becomes a sort of attendant, servant, or retainer.

If this is not mind control than what is? It is estimated that 210 million people worldwide suffer from social media addiction today. Understand three realities about it. As Sean Covey puts it: “Addictions can become stronger than you. You are not the only one impacted by your addiction. Addictions destroy your dreams, as you are wasting your time and life by wrong choices.”

After you have accepted the negative impact of social media addiction, the very next thing to do is to overcome it with Duas and an action plan. Allah (swt), Al-Mustaan, aids the true believer like no one can. These important steps can be your starting point.

  1. Turn off all notifications. The bings and the buzzes will no longer distract you.
  2. At bedtime, keep the phone in another room. Remember: just as an alcoholic is tempted to have a drink if the bottle is in the same room, a social media addict checks his status to read or post compulsively.
  3. “Place less weight on your social media appearance,” a tech addiction therapist Isabella Ward advises. “One of the big signs of social media addiction is that you spend a lot of time overthinking and over-planning your posts. This causes anxiety and stress.”
  4. Opt for alternatives. Rediscover old hobbies or fall in love with new ones. You must have something non-digital to do that steers you towards nature, family, pets, or social service. This will give you your doze of dopamine.
  5. Go for digital detox. Live away from your phone for some time. Use an old-fashioned mobile from your granny’s generation for your communication needs. Soon you will overcome this addiction and feel reborn.
