Those who met him could never forget him: his cheerful and glowing face, his beautiful speech, and his excellent manners. That was our Prophet Muhammad (sa). Loving him came naturally to those who had a pure heart. It was impossible not to be attracted by his goodness. Only those who were evil rejected the Prophet (sa).
Once, 30,000 companions under the Prophet (sa) travelled from Madinah to Makkah to do Umrah. They were stopped by the Kuffar, and one of their best men Urwa bin Masood came to the Prophet (sa) to discuss a deal. Urwa was an ambassador for the disbelievers, and had travelled to Persia and Rome.
When he came to meet the Prophet (sa), he engaged in talks, trying to convince the Muslims to return to Madinah without performing Umrah. While talking, he would try to reach out and stroke the Prophet’s (sa) beard as a friendly gesture. And each time the Prophet’s (sa) guard, whose face was hidden, would pull out his sword as a warning to Urwa to behave gracefully.
Finally Urwa asked: “Who is he?” It was replied to him: “Mughirah, your nephew.” Shocked, Urwa returned to the Makkan chiefs and narrated: “I have been to Persia and I have been to Rome. Never have I seen such love and obedience, as the companions have for Muhammad.”
Similarly, once Umar’s (rtam) own son asked him: “Why do you love Usama bin Zaid (rtam) (the Prophet’s (sa) adopted grandson) more than me?” Umar (rtam) replied: “Because the Prophet (sa) loved him.”
In Makkah, before the migration, Muslims were few and weak. They used to worship secretly at a place called Dar-ul-Arqam. But one day, Abu Bakr (rtam) insisted that the Prophet (sa) allow them to pray in the Kabah. Initially, the Prophet (sa) refused, because he knew the Kuffar will react angrily. But later he permitted Abu Bakr (rtam). When the Kuffar tried to attack the Prophet (sa) in anger, Abu Bakr Siddiq (rtam) came in between and was beaten up mercilessly, until he fainted. When he regained senses, he desperately asked if the Prophet (sa) was safe and refused to eat anything, until he saw him with his own eyes.
The Quran says that every Muslim must love Allah (swt) and the Prophet (sa) more than his fathers, sons, brothers, wives, children, money, business, and homes. Then he/she will taste the sweetness of faith.
