Some of the most beautiful narrations of Duas and practices come from students narrating from their teachers. If you have ever felt like you were reading something but had a hard time comprehending it, or you were feeling disconnected from something, or trying very hard to study for exams or prepare for a lecture, or trying to understand a verse or a Hadeeth, which just did not seem to make sense, then this is a really powerful Dua for you. Ibn Qayyim used to hear this frequently from his teacher. When his teacher would get stuck in his studies, he would make this Dua:
يا معلم إبراهيم علمني
Ya Mualimu Ibrahim Alamani.
O Teacher of Ibrahim (as)! Teach me!
Some narrations mention:
يامفهم سليمان فهمني
Ya Mufhimu Sulaiman Fahimni.
O He Who caused Sulaiman (as) to understand! Allow me to understand as well.
We can learn this is as a powerful Dua for the times when we are stuck as we try to understand things. We should recognize that Allah (swt) is the One Who grants knowledge, wisdom, and relief.
Beyond the immediate application of this Dua of calling upon Allah (swt) in this way is the idea that you are connecting yourself to the Lord of the prophets. Often when we read these Duas in the Quran, we tend to forget that the same Lord Who took care of those prophets, Who heard them in their darkest time, is the same Lord you are calling upon: the Lord of the Zakariya (as) is your Lord as well; the Lord of Maryam, Eesa (as) and Muhammad (sa) is your Lord as well. So when you read about the miracle that Allah (swt) infused in their lives, recognize that He can bring about the same miracles in our lives. When you go through the daily difficulties, trials, or struggles, recognize that you have the Lord of Ibrahim (as) by your side.
May the Lord of prophets grant us the station of the prophets as well. Ameen.
