“Say: Travel in the land and see how (Allah) originated creation, and then Allah will bring forth (resurrect) the creation of the Hereafter (i.e. resurrection after death). Verily, Allah is Able to do all things.” (Al-Ankabut 29:20)
As a Muslim traveller away from home, you must have experienced certain challenges: the struggle of not knowing the local prayer times, determining the Qiblah direction, searching for the nearest mosque or a clean decent place to pray, and trying to ascertain whether a meal is Muslim-friendly or not.
How can we solve these problems? Here are some useful apps:
- Muslim Pro (for Qiblah direction)
A must-have and very useful tool indeed! Just download this app, click on the built-in Qiblah locator, and you’re good to go. You will also be able to recite the Quran with the built-in audio recitations by your favourite reciters. Translations in different languages are also available.
It features a user-friendly interface, and I can assure you that the information in this app is correct and up-to-date, and will give you the local prayer timings, no matter which part of the world you are travelling to.
- Quran Companion (for Quran on the go)
As Muslims, our desire to build a meaningful relationship with the Quran should not take a break while travelling. This app will most certainly make the connection easy for you, whether you are in the air, on land, or on the water! While you enjoy your much deserved holiday, you must listen to your favourite Surahs and recitations, especially if you are out in the open, surrounded by nature.
Consider this pocket-sized tutor, even if you are not travelling. This application provides guided lessons to help you memorize the Surahs of your choice. In addition, there are games that test your ability to recall what you have previously learnt. In fact, imagine the rewards of memorizing the Quran together with your travelling buddies. Your shared faith not only reinforces but also helps strengthen the bond on your trips together.
- Ayah a Day
I recently found out that this is a joint collaboration by Bayyinah Institute and Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan. This particular app prompts you to read and listen to a Quranic verse together with its meaning and explanation from Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan himself. You will receive a new Ayah notification every day. Each audio clip is less than five minutes long, so it is perfect even for a morning commute to work!
- Google Maps (to find your way)
Google can be your very best friend in any part of the world. If you get lost in a foreign country without a map on hands, your buddy Google Maps will save the day! With real-time transit information, you will not miss your bus or train. If you are on the road, beat the traffic with real-time navigation, estimated time of arrival (ETA), and traffic and weather conditions. You can also download the maps and use them offline or take screenshots, when connected.
