Unfortunately, racism, or more particularly colourism, is nothing new in the Ummah. The society in which the blessed Prophet (sa) was born into had its own kind of colour caste that was not only restricted to colour but also to ethnicity, language and wealth. This is a form of racism. It is also a form of bullying, which we experience and impose on ourselves. This racist mentality is openly accepted by most communities and is promoted by the media and the beauty industries.
Our Prophet Muhammad (sa) abolished this ignorant and backward attitude over fourteen hundred years ago. Surely, it is our piety and goodness that defines our worth as human beings. If we uphold justice and speak the Haqq (truth) in the face of injustice, we are raised in the eyes of Allah (swt).
