She dreamt to revolutionize Pakistan’s muddled educational system. Coupled with her vision to bring her PhD thesis to life by laying foundations in AI, Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, a brilliant Pakistani neuroscientist hoped to transform Pakistan from a third-world to a first-world country.
Unfortunately this mother of three became a victim of the events surrounding the War on Terror in 2003. She is currently serving an 86-year prison sentence over false charges in a US federal prison. According to her sister, Dr. Fowzia, throughout her incarceration, she has reportedly endured severe physical, mental, and sexual abuse.

- Pray for her
Even if we do nothing, as a believer we must ensure to keep her in our prayers every day. Allah Al Aziz, the most Mighty and Al Qawi, the most Strong has divine plans for everyone. He is Al Muheet, the One Who surrounds the disbelievers. But as a believer we need to stand before Him one day too for our initiatives.

- Contribute financially
The movement is now accepting monetary contributions to support the fight for Dr. Aafia’s justice and release. You can specify a particular purpose for your donation, or allow it to be used where it’s most needed. Donations primarily fund investigations to strengthen the court case, provide legal assistance, cover travel expenses related to legal proceedings and visits, support the movement’s operations, and address Dr. Aafia’s living expenses in prison.
These donations are Zakat-eligible. For donation details, please visit the Aafia Movement’s website and their social media pages mentioned above.
- Hold your local authorities responsible
Politicians have consistently used Dr. Aafia’s case to win votes without making a significant effort towards her release. Although they were responsible for handing her over in the past, they have been indifferent to her suffering throughout. Whether selected or elected, we have every right to hold our leaders accountable, demanding an end to this torture. We must write to relevant authorities and use our connections to reach those in power. They have the resources available to negotiate a deal if only this became their priority.
Don’t let the oppressors win. Show that you care. We cannot continue being part of the silent majority.
- Volunteer for the movement
You can choose to dedicate some hours to the movement in whatever capacity possible. Add value to the cause according to your strengths. May Allah (SWT) accept our efforts!

Why is it important to play our part?
We have often viewed this situation as a test for Dr. Aafia and her family, but it is crucial to understand that this is a greater test for the Muslim Ummah. As followers of a religion founded on the principles of justice and the protection of women’s honour, we have severely compromised these values in exchange for a few dollars. This situation is a stain on the human rights that we, as Pakistanis and the world at large, claim to uphold.
The silence surrounding her kidnapping and unlawful detention has emboldened the enemies of our country and Islam, giving them a green light to act as they please. They believe they can occupy territories like Kashmir and Gaza and inflict suffering on innocent Muslims without facing significant opposition.
Now or never!
Considering the conditions of her detention and the assault she has continually endured since 2003, Dr. Aafia’s mental and physical health has been deteriorating; her life is hanging by a thread. The clock is ticking, and urgent action is required for her to reunite with her children and family.
The constant 21-year struggle by Dr. Fowzia, her sister, and those affiliated with the cause has yielded substantial results. These include two of Dr. Aafia’s children returning home and Dr. Fowzia being allowed to meet her sister for the first time in two decades. We must not lose hope.
With lawyers like Clive Stafford Smith on board, who has played a vital role in freeing tens of Guantanamo Bay prisoners, including five Pakistanis, new avenues have opened up. Additionally, with the US presidential elections looming, the organisation sees hopes of a retrial and other possibilities.
May Allah (SWT) grant Dr Aafia Siddiquie a speedy return back home and abundance in the Akhirah. May He be pleased with her family and reward them for their patience and tireless efforts. May He forgive us for our shortcomings and enable us to become as strong in faith as the Sahaba.
